The event began with a perfect opening display of QC punctuality in starting the prelims 20 mins late. With teams of 3, freshers started arriving at II LT 2 by 7.20 pm, and by the time all were seated, the lecture theatre had barely room for the seniors and organizers. Jwala hostel, already a force to reckon with in QC, brought with itself a horde of 7 freshers teams, with Dhruv, the rep, walking proudly amongst his charges and muttering instructions in their ears time and again.
The prelims consisted of 15 questions, well-balanced and work out-able. 14 teams were selected - the best team from each hostel followed by 3 overall second placers. Shivalik, Vindhyachal and Jwala successfully got two teams into the finals.
After a bit of seating issues, and with most of the QC seniors present, the finals were ready to begin. It was a well-rounded quiz consisting of a good mix old and new questions, with the usual QC quirks and Contri-isms.
The quiz had 5 rounds, each showcasing a different format employed in various QC events :
- Written Round
- Infinite Bounce
- LVC
- Jeopardy
- Lone Wolf
The points system followed was +2/0 in the first 2 rounds, with the LVC beginning at+7/-5 and decreasing at 2 per slide. Jeopardy had +2/0 for Level 1 questions and +3/0 for Level-2 and Lone Wolf followed the usual format of negatives on a directed question. 6 teams were eliminated after the first 3 rounds and 2 more were sent back after round 4.
The quiz began with Nishit beginning the written round, a fine blend of text and image-based questions. Aritro added his touch by asking a question on the story of the Sleeping Beauty, who's real name I forget. And so did most of the teams.
Having got a good head start in the written round, teams began to up the ante in the second round. Google Doodles, King Kong filled the infinite bounce. One of the questions had the owners of Zynga in their famous image promoting Farmville, and when asked to ID, one of the Shiva teams guessed the Beatles, with their logic being that since the Fab4 keep doing weird stuff, then why not an office watercooler with chickens and cows around!
The round ended quickly with Satpura and Kara teams doing well and an over-zealous Zanskar fachcha giving long explanations to almost-correct answers.
The older lot got excited on seeing the LVC, being based on names of Tintin comics. One of the Jwala teams took a risk by going for the connect at the first set of clues. And with it got their first taste of negatives and lost their chance of staying on further. The scorer, behind who this loud team was sitting, heaved a sigh of relief. It was a surprise that only 2 teams managed to get the connect without all the slides being shown. Vindy and Zanskar teams managed to get the connect at +6 and +5 stages respectively, which ultimately proved decisive in the results.
The eliminations after LVC made a few of the seniors walk out in disgust at their hostel teams unable to qualify. Notable absentees being Piyush and Shankhayan with both the Jwala teams getting eliminated.
And Azeez departed as well.
The next round, Jeopardy, was unique in it being a dedication to QC seniors. 16 questions divided into 8 categories and each one was a tribute to a QC stalwart in that genre. The categories were:
Sci-Tech - Shankhayan and Attam
Biz - GD and Chaitanya
Lit - Shruti and Murari
Ent - Contri and Mayank
T&L - Nishit and Arnab
Sports - Piyush and Azeez
Hist-Myth - Shri and Salik
Mixed Bag - Shuvi and Aritro
The eliminations continued after this round to keep the number at only 6 for the final round. The method of directing the next question used generally in Lone Wolf was used here. The Vindy team made good use of the format to confirm their position at the top. So did the team from Kara, using the method to their advantage to climb up to the 3rd spot. Zanskar managed to hold on to 2nd place.
